Dominicks Closing

December 14, 2013

On October 30th, Dominick’s Finer Foods notified the State of Illinois that it would close all 72 of its Chicago-area stores by Dec. 28, displacing 5,633 workers. Coupled with the closings are all the Chase branches located inside the store.

Dominick’s, Chicago’s second largest supermarket chain after Jewel, began in 1925 as a corner market on the West Side. Safeway, the second largest grocery chain purchased Dominick’s in 1998 for $1.2 billion.

The plans for the vacant stores announced so far include Jewel-Osco taking over four stores and Mariano’s Fresh Market, announcing it will purchase 11.

Update – Jewel has purchase the following four locations 1340 S. Canal St. and 2550 N. Clybourn Ave. in Chicago; 14200 S. Bell Rd., Homer Glen; and 1340 Patriot Blvd., Glenview. They will continue to operate as Dominicks until January when they are rebranded as Jewel.
