Stop & Shop Freeport NY Closing

In the ever tumultuous world of supermarkets, Stop & Shop has announced it is closing its Freeport, NY located at 249 East Sunrise Hwy store on February 11th. They cited the recent purchase of the A&P store at 905 Atlantic Avenue, Baldwin, which is about 2 3/4 miles away as the reason. Stop & Shop has another recently expanded store in Merrick at 2160 Merrick Mall, just north of the train station.

I have shopped at the Freeport store and like its layout, selection and very wide aisles. With the closing of Waldbaums in Merrick the Merrick Stop & Shop has been crowded for the few times that I go there. Best Market, which purchased the Merrick Waldbaums has not reopened yet. According to the Best Market website the Merrick store is coming soon.
